Hon. Lynn M. Egan, (Ret.) will present “Facing the Unknown: Judicial Discretion During Jury Selection” as part of her monthly lunchtime seminar series.

“This seminar demonstrates the different jury selection methods used by four judges who are newly assigned to the jury section and preside over some of the most complex cases in the Law Division,” Judge Egan said.

The presentation will review the statutes pertaining to jury selection and discuss why some judges utilize discretion during the jury selection process.

“Jury selection involves strategic decisions that can influence whether a party wins or loses, so it is essential that attorneys understand the significant amount of discretion afforded to trial judges – even when their selection methods may vary from the applicable case law and statutes,” Judge Egan said.

Judge Egan will speak alongside Cook County Circuit Court Judges Larry Axelrood, Bridget Mitchell, Marguerite Quinn and Robert Senechalle. The presentation will be from noon-1:15pm November 9th at the Assembly Hall Auditorium in the James R. Thompson Center. It is approved for one hour of general continuing legal education (CLE) credit by the Illinois MCLE Board.
