Hon. Helaine L. Berger, (Ret.), senior mediator and arbitrator at ADR Systems, spoke at the 7th Annual Women’s Bar Association of Illinois (WBAI) Domestic Relations Roundtable Seminar on May 16th.

The discussion focused on changes to the child support, maintenance and removal statutes, proposed legislation impacting parenting responsibility and the impact of the Tax Reform Act. The roundtable also focused on practical issues, including civility in the litigation process, and solving complex fact patterns and scenarios.

“It was important to educate the attorneys regarding how the mediation process can solve many of the financial issues resulting from the changes to the child support and maintenance statutes,” said Judge Berger. “The attorneys agreed that many of the changes to the law could best be addressed by settling complicated financial issues through mediation rather than litigation.”

The roundtable included a panel of 22 current and former Cook County judges, law firm partners and attorneys throughout Illinois – all with a focus on family law.

ADR Systems, It’s Settled.®

Judge Harmening is an excellent mediator. Even in situations where settlement is not achieved the day of the mediation, Judge Harmening will continue talks with the parties when he can sense that a settlement is still possible, and gets it done. We have successfully settled several cases with Judge Harmening to the satisfaction of all parties. I am looking forward to working with him on many more in the future.
