Hon. Helaine L. Berger, (Ret.) and Hon. Margaret A. Brennan, (Ret.), senior mediators and arbitrators at ADR Systems, recently presented at the Supreme Court of Greece as part of the Chicago Bar Association’s Continuing Legal Education Abroad program.

Judge Berger and Judge Brennan participated in “Alternative Dispute Resolution in the U.S. and Greece,” an interactive presentation comparing and contrasting mediation and arbitration rules and practices in the United States and Greece. The presentation was conducted in a conversational panel format, with a moderator guiding discussion between the US presenters and members of the Athens Bar Association.

“During the program, our panel explored Greece’s growing use of alternative dispute resolution as the country works to address court backlog issues,” said Judge Berger. The presenters also discussed how certain disputes in Greece are subject to mandatory mediation requirements, as well as key distinctions between the two legal systems.

“One of the interesting differences we discussed was that mediators in Greece tend to focus on a single practice area,” said Judge Brennan. “In the United States, mediators often handle a broad range of commercial and personal injury matters.”

Judge Berger and Judge Brennan were honored to be selected as specialists in their field from the United States and to share their insight alongside Greek legal professionals as part of this international legal education program.

ADR Systems, It’s Settled. ®

In an automobile accident case involving a severe injury, Judge Callahan kept both sides negotiating even when it appeared we were going to be over six figures apart at the end. His insights and guidance were instrumental in getting both sides to a dollar figure that ultimately settled the case. I am confident that we could not have achieved that settlement without Judge Callahan’s superb efforts.
