Hon. Larry G. Axelrood, (Ret.), senior mediator and arbitrator at ADR Systems, recently settled a $1.9 million personal injury case.

The case stemmed from a 2015 car crash wherein the plaintiff sustained a broken leg and broken wrists as a result of a head-on collision. The plaintiff required surgery on her leg. Her vehicle was hit by the defendant’s vehicle when the defendant attempted to pass a semi-trailer truck by changing lanes and driving into oncoming traffic.

Judge Axelrood worked with the parties to overcome a secondary dispute which impeded settlement. The defendant was driving from her home to work when the accident happened, according to The Chicago Daily Law Bulletin. The defendant admitted negligence, but the employer disputed whether she was acting in the scope of her employment during the crash. After working through this issue, the parties agreed to settlement.

Judge Axelrood has extensive experience with medical malpractice, nursing home, railroad, legal malpractice, premises liability, construction and personal injury matters. Having served on the Evanston Police Pension Board and the Illinois Judges Association Pension and Benefits Committee, Judge Axelrood also has in-depth experience with pensions and their impact on various types of cases.

Our mediation using videoconferencing was convenient and effective – we settled! Judge Casciato gained the party's trust and confidence while deftly guiding us through the negotiation process via a videoconference.  With the use of virtual breakout rooms, Judge Casciato was able to spend private time with everyone.  This remote mediation worked well for us and I would not hesitate to use it again.
